Introduction of Rotary Tiller
The blades of the rotary tiller are attached to the rotor, which is bolted directly to a single horizontal power shaft 8″ to 12″
above the soil surface. For row CHINAMFG weeding, they are more expensive and require more maintenance than sweepers. They operate faster than sweeping in crusted soil, but slower under normal conditions. However, tillers are better suited for other tillage roles and can reduce field passage by adding residue, forming beds, and creating seedbeds in a single pass. Uses include band planting cover crops, preparing permanent planting beds, renovating strawberry plantings, and adding compost or soil-applied herbicides. Blade length limits how high the CHINAMFG can safely pass under the CHINAMFG drive shaft. The visibility of the work area is limited by the tool cover.
Rotors must be selectively removed or adjusted for inter-row weeding – a minimum of 2 hours of work. In most cases, the drive shaft is powered by a chain drive. A manufacturer’s multi-belt drive cushions sudden shocks. Features to check include multi-speed gearbox drive (slowest RPM to prevent soil structure damage), PTO slip clutch for chain drive models, and depth control mode. When working on rough soil, the front depth gauge wheels do not work as well as a side slip or a rear gravel/roller. An optional CHINAMFG guard keeps soil from flowing in.
